Patrick Aganyebi, a maintenance operator aboard the Trinity Spirit oil ship, holds up his ID card in his home in Igbokoda, Nigeria, on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022. Days after being hospitalized from the injuries they sustained escaping the fire on the Trinity Spirit, Aganyebi and his colleague Pius Orofin learned they were being sent to jail, accused of conspiring to commit “Murder, Arson, and Malicious Damage,” according to charging documents. Pius Orofin, a deck operator aboard the Trinity Spirit oil ship, speaks during an interview at his home in Okitipupa, Nigeria, on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022. The Trinity Spirit’s surviving crew members have been plagued by ailments long after their escape from the fire. Orofin’s hearing is damaged, and he has a long scar on his leg. Not long after that vivid night, still in the throes of recovery, he and colleague Patrick Aganyebi were taken to jail for 19 days. (AP Photo/Sunday Alamba)

It was the dead of night when the Trinity Spirit caught fire, Aganyebi remembers, but the flames made it seem as bright as day. Months afterward, his eyes were still damaged from the glare. He tucked his phone and ID card in his pockets, strapped on a life jacket and made his way to the upper deck, and as the flames barreled toward him, prepared to jump nearly 100 feet (30 meters) into the sea. FILE - Technical vessels are seen by the decrepit Safer tanker on Monday, June 12, 2023, off the coast of Yemen. The Safer was built as a tanker and later converted into a floating storage unit. Maintenance on the ship ended in 2015. By 2020, seawater had seeped into the Safer's engine room, corroded pipes and damaged the vessel beyond repair. (AP Photo/Osamah Abdulrahman, File)

FILE - This 2019 photo provided by I.R. Consilium shows internal decay of the FSO Safer and the lack of a functioning cathodic protection system, moored off Ras Issa port, Yemen. The Safer had posed an environmental threat since 2015, as it decayed and threatened to spill its contents of 1.14 million barrels into the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. After years of alarm and negotiations, the Safer’s oil was transferred onto another tanker in August. (I.R. Consilium via AP, File)

This combination of photos provided by Pius Orofin, a deck operator aboard the Trinity Spirit oil ship, shows rusted areas of the ship moored 15 miles off the coast of Nigeria, in November 2021. The ship, used to store and refine large quantities of oil extracted from the ocean floor, caught fire on Feb. 2, 2022. The three survivors of the Trinity Spirit's explosion - Orofin, Patrick Aganyebi and Lawrence Yorgolo - told the AP of the lack of safety procedures on the ship and of equipment failures.
